The events leading to the death of the most dreaded terrorist in Nigeria happened Wednesday evening when the stronghold of the terror group leader was invaded by the fighters of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Islamic State West Africa Province raided the Bokoharam’ s hideout using multiple gun trucks and hundreds of fighters.
The King of Terror’ s base was invaded by ISWAP using its fighters the Timbuktu Triangle. Shekau’ s loyal fighters were overpowered in the process and more than 3 hours of gunfire exchange between the invading group and Shekau’ s bodyguards ensued.
Abubakar Shekau was said to have surrendered and engaged in long hours talks and negotiations with the ISWAP fighters after all his bodyguards were overpowered.
During the negotiations, he was asked to relinquish power and order all his fighters in other regions to declare allegiance to ISWAP’ s authority. They ISWAP fighters were expecting Mr Shekau to make a speech ordering all his fighters to do as he was directed.
The Bokoharam leader who felt humiliated was said not to be okay with such humiliation and detonated the suicide vest he secretly had on him and blew up himself and all those present during the negotiations.
The clear identities of all the ISWAP fighters present during the negotiations who died along side Shekau is not known.
Mr Shekau who have been the Helmsman of the dreaded militia group, Bokoharam since 2009 after the death of Mohammed Yusuf, the group’ s founder, have been rumoured to have been killed more than four times between July 2009 and August 2015.
The Nigerian Airforce claimed in August 2016 that Mr Shekau had been fatally wounded during an aerial bombardment by the military but the terrorist group later released a video barely one month later showing he was in good health and alive.
